I’ve been watching Severance on TV and I’ve got to say, it is a thought-provoking show. The problem is that it’s about 20% interesting and thought provoking, and about 80% artistic mystery. It’s just slow and it takes 43 minutes to convey about 10 minutes of story in each episode.

The show is all about mystery, and the problem with that is in how mystery and storytelling are at odds with one another. Too much mystery and suddenly, the show is not telling a story, it’s just presenting puzzles and Easter eggs and nothing else. Too little mystery and it’s more visual stimulation than anything else.

I think the balance of it is off and it’s way too mystery/art oriented. Fortunately, the concept of being two different people, and having to deal with death of a “person” without death of the mind and body, is very interesting. And when there is story told and some mystery is resolved, it’s a fun watch.

I just wish it were not so damned artistic and slow, and that it would just get to the point already.
